We have a tradition of doing cheese and chocolate fondue for dinner with our kids. It is fun and the kids feel loved and special knowing that we want to be with them on “love day”. My husband and I also decided years ago that we would switch off buying gifts/planning a Valentine’s date. We go on a date for Valentine’s Day, but we do it on a different night. One year I will buy a gift and he will plan the date. The next year we switch.

This year it was my turn to plan the date and his to buy the gift. He got me a Kindle Fire HD and a box of See’s Chocolates. Woo hoo! I am so excited about my Kindle and the See’s have special meaning to us (and good chocolates are just yummy!). For our date we will be going to a steakhouse and seeing a romantic movie. Nothing too exciting but we are definitely looking forward to it. But I did want to do something special for him and something to commemorate our love for each other on Valentine’s Day.

So, after dinner last night we put the kids upstairs watching a movie with instructions to go to bed after it was over. And I planned a “Spa Night” for my lover. It was soooo fun to plan it and set it all up. I just knew he would LOVE it. And he totally did. And even though it was a lot of work for me I really loved doing it for him. I want to share what I did and how I did it.

I didn’t take pictures, but I did take these shots of the bathtub area the next morning.

CLICK TO CONTINUE READING »Emily @ RemarkableHomehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17404237532836739692noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7648396028210882400.post-35177361654269299522014-02-17T07:00:00.000-07:002014-02-18T11:15:55.689-07:00Laundry: The Never-ending Torment {And my awesome laundry system!}

I am not a fan of laundry. I’ve always thought it was because it was never done. As soon as you wash the last load, someone has something dirty again. But I recently realized not only do I hate that it is never complete, I hate that there is always laundry all over the house…clean baskets of things to fold, piles of laundry to put away, or baskets of folded clothes waiting to be taken up to the kids room, or the WORST, clean folded laundry unfolded by kids looking through it for their favorite jeans. And then there was the laundry room where people would just throw in any laundry sitting around the main floor…socks, sweatshirts, towels…anything someone had left laying around when they had to clean a room. So, the laundry room was always a mess.

For the past couple years, I have been making my 11 and 10 year old sons do their own laundry. This happened as a punishment for me doing their laundry and asking them to put it away and me later finding clean folded clothes back in the dirty clothes, in a basket under the bathroom sink, or just sitting in their room for weeks. So, I told them I was not doing their laundry anymore and they would have to do it. My older son does ok with it, though usually he is doing laundry at the worst possible times when he realizes Sunday night has has nothing to wear to school the next day. Or they will start their laundry and then leave it in the washer until I advance it so that I can use the washer for my own laundry. My 10 year old will just wear EVERYTHING he owns until he has about 6 loads of laundry to do. Then, he will start wearing all dirty clothes. In other words, he will never do his laundry. I had had enough of this system! I was sick of not having the washer available and sick of my kids wearing wrinkled and/or dirty clothes.

I have FINALLY come up with and awesome laundry system that is totally working for us! Granted, there are still clothes all over the kids rooms, but since I don’t have to live in their rooms it isn’t bothering me too much. Here is what I did:

CLICK TO CONTINUE READING »Emily @ RemarkableHomehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17404237532836739692noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7648396028210882400.post-65850245766391849502014-02-05T07:40:00.000-07:002014-02-05T07:40:00.158-07:00SALE @ Silhouette America!
I’m excited to tell you that Silhouette America is having another sale!

This sale will run from Feb. 6-14th! If you’ve had your eye on a Silhouette, now would be a good time to whisper in your honey’s ear that a Silhouette would make a great Valentine’s Day gift!

To take advantage of the sale, go to www.silhouetteamerica.com/designer and use the promo code REMARKABLE at checkout.

Here is what’s being offered in this sale:

1. I just came to the realization than when I am blogging heavily I am not able to be the wife and mother I want to be. I have still be living a creative life and thinking of things I’d like to share with you all. I hope to blog occasionally without the stress of having perfect pictures or promoting my blog on social media. I hope you will still enjoy reading from time to time and will share my posts with your friends and family. today I am blogging because I made 175 gourmet caramel apples last week and the week before and now I have some sort of soft tissue problem with my thumb! so I am trying not to use it as much as possible. I figured typing was my best bet!

My kids have a problem with keeping track of their money. For years we had money laying around, getting lost, and money getting stolen by other brothers! I had finally had enough, so I devised a system to help my kids keep track of their money and keep it safer.

Here is our Nelson Family Bank Binder:

I originally did this with a binder and page protectors. It worked fine, except when the kids would get out the binder (which they weren’t supposed to do) they would end up dumping half the money out! So the other day at Walmart I came across these zippered binder pouches for $0.47 each. I knew they would be perfect! So, I upgraded our page protectors to binder pouches.

How does it work? I have a big three ring binder. In the binder there are 4 pouches for each child (my son in college obviously isn’t included). Each pouch is labeled with the fund it is for. In our family the kids have a fund for Retirement, Church Missions, Tithing, and then just their Savings. They can take money from their Savings to spend on things now at their own discretion, but I encourage them to save most of their money so they can buy Christmas gifts for each other as well as other things they may want to buy down the road.

<img title="IMG_3344" style="border-top: 0px; If this petition is successful it would help protect anyone (especially children) from happening upon inappropriate sites on accident. Before the internet, only adults were allowed to purchase and view pornography- let's help keep our kids safe. As Of now, the petition needs 95000 more votes in just two weeks!

Please help me by signing the petition. It only takes a minute. It is about allowing your kids to be who they are, not who society tells them they SHOULD be.

My ten year old son likes pink. Yup, pink. He loves it, actually. This is a boy who isn’t a typical “boy”. He is a very creative, sensitive child. He doesn’t much care for ball sports, though he does like the outdoors and more solitary activities like rock climbing, running, swimming, etc. Because of his dislike of team sports, I have been worried that he will have a hard time fitting in with other boys. I have tried to encourage him to at least play sports recreationally, but he hasn’t been too keen on it. He really isn’t all that coordinated. He is NOT a natural, if you know what I mean. Well, recently he came to me and said he wanted to play soccer. I was shocked, but also happy that he was warming up to sports a little. I quickly registered him for a soccer camp that starts next week. He is excited about it. I doubt he will ever be great at soccer, but I think it is great that he is willing to give it a go and have fun doing it.

Well, he needed soccer cleats and socks and shin guards. Well, she has now gone well over a year. 449 days, I believe. She has recommitted to another full year as well. I spent some time reading through her blog and finding out how she has accomplished the impossible. And I found it she did it one day, or one moment, at a time.

I have five crazy, energetic, messy, strong-willed sons and I have to confess I am a yeller. I always have been, even since childhood. I am a loud person. And I yell at my kids. Way too much. I have decided to become an Orange Rhino as well. I want to stop yelling. And I want the rest of my family to stop yelling as well. I decided to take the Orange Rhino Challenge. I printed off Orange Rhino signs and posted them all over my house. I told my kids and husband what I am trying to do. I have definitely improved and even had days where I haven’t yelled at all.

But I haven’t been able to keep the challenge at the forefront of my mind all the time. I need to find a way to stay focused on it. I need to track my yell-free days. I haven’t yet figured out how I want to do that. But I know I want our home to be yell-free. I want peace and love to abound. I want my kids to learn to deal with problems and disagreements in a new way…without yelling. So, we are working on it.

I wanted to share this with you. If you are a yeller I encourage you to take the challenge with me! What more important thing could you do for your family than provide a peaceful, loving home? Our children are so precious. They don’t deserve to be yelled at.

I do so many things to try to make my home a better place for my family.

But the real truth is that a home with a mom who doesn’t yell will be the most ReMarkable Home of all!
 Emily @ RemarkableHomehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17404237532836739692noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7648396028210882400.post-70060765631606724402013-04-18T06:00:00.000-06:002013-04-18T06:00:12.035-06:00Independence Day Plates using Vinyl {and a Silhouette America Promo Code!}
First I want to wish a VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY to TWO of my younger sisters! I’ve been working hard trying to figure out how to make this summer work. With all the packing and things I need to do to prepare for our move, I don’t want my kids sitting in front of the TV all day, bored out of their minds. I REALLY want them to get to have a fun summer, despite the move.

I’ve been looking for ideas and will be compiling some different things to make a fun summer for my kids. I came across this

I loved some of their ideas. I am up in the mountains at my sister’s cabin and I decided to work out our summer plans while I am up here. Today I came up with theme days for our week days. I made this cute printable to share with my readers. I haven’t printed it yet, so if you print it and the colors are awful, please tell me. I have no printer up here to try it out on.

They remind me of my childhood. My oldest sister used to make them for us. I love peanut butter, and oats, and crunchy nuts. I love their fudge-like consistency. Awhile back I saw a pin for blueberry no-bake cookies. But when I went to the recipe it was made with healthy ingredients and she said that the cookies were very crumbly and had to be refrigerated. That didn’t sound too good to me. So, I read a bunch of other no-bake cookies recipes and came up with this recipe. I thought these were good and my family seemed to really like them. I think next time I would add some chopped almonds for some crunch and maybe even a couple spoonfuls of blueberry jam.

This is a great recipe for people who have a peanut allergy in the family. It doesn’t call for peanut butter. It is flavored with pudding mix. You could use any flavor of pudding mix you want and change up the add-ins. Banana and walnut would be yummy. Or chocolate and dried cherries. I thought blueberry cheesecake sounded good so that is what I went for. If you’re not using cheesecake flavored pudding then there’s really no reason to add the cream cheese. Just omit it.

Give them a try and let me know what you think!
CLICK TO CONTINUE READING »Emily @ RemarkableHomehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17404237532836739692noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7648396028210882400.post-38976218592622468952013-04-11T07:00:00.000-06:002013-04-11T07:00:06.087-06:00Graduation is coming up! The guests really enjoyed looking at it, too!

CLICK TO CONTINUE READING »Emily @ RemarkableHomehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17404237532836739692noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7648396028210882400.post-80737966244167277352013-04-10T07:00:00.000-06:002013-04-10T07:00:01.687-06:00Easy Sunday Dinner: GRAMMY’S SWISS STEAK- Meat Kids Love! {Recipe}

This recipe came from my grandmother. She was an amazing woman! She has been gone about 12 or 13 years now and I miss her terribly. As a retired teacher and divorcee, she spent many, many hours in our home helping us and our parents. Many of my friends thought she lived with us because she was around so much. She helped cook, clean, do laundry, yard work, drive us around, read to us, and so much more. I miss her so very, very much. Guess I already told you that. I +am so grateful that I got to have her as such a central part of my life for so many years! Grammy only had 10 grandchildren, but she grand-mothered all the children she came in contact with! She was loved by all who knew her and is fondly remembered by so many!

Grammy used to cook dinner for us several nights a week and this is something she would make quite often. It is one of my favorite foods and I make it regularly. Actually, I taught my husband to make it and he often will make it for Sunday dinner along with mashed potatoes, rolls and a vegetable. Kids love it because the meat is soft enough for them to chew easily. It is one meal that ALL my kids eat without complaint. It is great for Sunday because you can make it before church and let it bake while you are gone. I hope you will give it a try!

Here are the simple steps:
CLICK TO CONTINUE READING »Emily @ RemarkableHomehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17404237532836739692noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7648396028210882400.post-11680817542317265782013-04-09T07:00:00.000-06:002013-04-09T07:00:14.348-06:00Pinteresting Tuesday: 9 Outdoor Garden IdeasIt is finally Spring (though its been snowing here in Utah!) and I am really getting the itch to do some yard work and plant some things. I enjoy working in the yard on a beautiful Spring day. And even more than that I enjoy sitting in a beautiful yard on a beautiful Spring day.

Since its been too cold to hang out in my yard lately, I thought it would be fun to round up some outdoor/yard/planting ideas today from my Pinterest Outdoor Style board. This is where I pin gardening tips, as well as landscape design ideas and outdoor room ideas. I hope these pins inspire you to do something amazing in your outdoor space this spring!
We have a major pest problem around here and I am thinking any vegetables I plant will be eaten in a big way but I saw this and thought maybe I could do this on the deck outside my kitchen! Hanging herb garden!
They are delicious and super cute. I love them because you can color them to match your theme. I made them for my son’s Milk and Cookies First Birthday Party in orange and blue. I’ve made them for another party in bright spring colors. Recently, I decided to make some to match a display table I was putting together for a church event. But I thought it would be fun to change up the flavor and make them coconut spritz. They turned out super delicious, so I thought I would share the recipe.

Spritz are a butter cookie made with a cookie press. You can pop them out by the dozens in a very short amount of time. If you don’t have a press, I recommend getting one. I got mine at Michael’s using a 40% off coupon a few years ago. If you don’t want to buy one, you can still make these. Just roll the dough in small balls. They are very tasty.
CLICK TO CONTINUE READING »Emily @ RemarkableHomehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17404237532836739692noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7648396028210882400.post-40262642353606346422013-04-05T06:00:00.000-06:002013-04-05T06:00:06.643-06:00Garden Tea Party Shower {Repost}
One of my very first posts was this Garden Tea Party baby shower I threw for a friend. It was fun to get to do girly things and use PINK!!! The shower came together beautifully. See the green tablecloth?? I got it at Goodwill for a few dollars! The quilt you see on the food table was made from designer fabric samples I got from my design job. I actually made (with help) 9 of them in all different colors and we used them at a picnic for the family and close friends on my wedding day. I love to pull them out and use them for different things all these years later.

Banquet tables with chairs arranged casually around them

Pink Tulle anchors the centerpieces

{more after the break}

CLICK TO CONTINUE READING »Emily @ RemarkableHomehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17404237532836739692noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7648396028210882400.post-67800399994625633352013-04-04T06:00:00.000-06:002013-04-04T06:00:10.403-06:00Beach Sand Drip Towers {Repost}
We are at the beach again for Spring Break this year! What could be better?

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Beach Sand Drip Towers

I am at the beach with my family right now enjoying our spring break. We spent the afternoon together on the beach. It was an absolutely perfect day! Not too hot, not too cold, tide was out, kids all had fun, just a really perfect afternoon!

One of my favorite things to do when we are at the beach is to build drip towers. To me, it is super relaxing and also fun. It is sort of like doing an abstract sculpture or something. I love that you never know just how it will turn out. I love trying to make them super tall and seeing how high I can get them before they fall over. I taught my middle boys how to do it this time. They thought it was super fun too. If you have never made drip towers, you need to! Get down in the sand with your kids and have fun creating!

They are super easy. Here’s how:

<img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="Make beach sand drip towers with your kids this year! I hope you will find some things you haven't seen here before!

Today is Cookie of the Week day, but instead of a recipe I thought it would be fun to re-post a Cookies and Milk Birthday Party I threw for my youngest son's first birthday. I hope you like it!

Milk & Cookies First Birthday Party

Last year while perusing the web I came across the CUTEST idea for a party over at A. Party Style. Anne had thrown a Milk and Cookies Party for her daughter. I immediately fell in love with the idea. If you read my post about the Versatile Blog Award you would know that I LOVE LOVE LOVE cookies! So, I decided my baby boy needed a Milk and Cookies Party for his first birthday! I decided to make it a PJ party since it was going to be after dinner on a weeknight and we would have a lot of school aged kids there.
For colors I went with turquoise blue, dark brown, tan, and dark orange.

Here is the invitation I made. I just don’t like them. I love salad and fresh veggies, but cooked ones just don’t sit right on my tongue. But a few years ago I was TRYING to be better about making vegetables for my family for dinner. I was looking for creative ways to prepare them that would make them more palatable for me, yet still healthy. She uses Firefox as her web browser and when I have the comment form embedded in the blog post so that you write your comments on the same page as the post, rather than in a pop-up box, she can’t comment. She can write the comment and click post, but it never shows up.

I am wondering if other Firefox users have had this problem. I love the embedded comment form because you can reply directly to another commenter in the thread. You can’t do that with the pop-up comment form. But I don’t want to keep people from commenting.

Please leave me a comment letting me know if you use Firefox and if you have been able to comment on my blog the past few months or not. I currently have the comment form set to pop-up, rather than embedded, so everyone should be able to comment.

THANKS!
Emily @ RemarkableHomehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17404237532836739692noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7648396028210882400.post-7735411519717735412013-03-26T07:00:00.000-06:002013-04-08T12:56:53.012-06:00Pinteresting Tuesdays: DIY Cake Plates and Treat Stands
I am in love with footed plates and bowls, as well as tiered plates and cupcake stands. I noticed I have quite a few homemade versions on my Pinterest Things to Make page. So I thought it would be fun to round them up here today. I have yet to make one of these, but I really want to. There are some really fun ones! These types of plates are so fun for parties and buffet tables. They just really make things feel special!
